There were few directly aimed at teenagers, just some that had younger protagonists perhaps that particularly appealed to not quite adults.

Now I'm in my mid-50s and the publishing bandwagon that is YA is in full flow, the titles aimed at teens proliferating. There is a formula and every publisher has to have certain types of YA book on their lists... The age of Twilikes is over, Suicide lit is the new black (book cover) mostly BFPNs as you call them - this trend worries me greatly and I have blogged on the topic.

Having a teenaged daughter, I'm interested in what she's reading. I still like reading YA books alongside my normal reading fare too - but typically I pick different titles to my daughter! Here Lies Arthur by Philip Reeve was the novel that reawakened my love of novels aimed at teens. Clever and different, it's a superb piece of writing.

One thing your post didn't really pick up on was that pushing a book into the YA category publishers define it as a book that adults won't want to read. It actually limits that crossover market. Your latest, The Ghosts of Heaven (which I adored) and also Blood Red, Snow White (which I adored too) are two such - they can be read by anyone, but I guess they won't appear on many general fiction shelves, only the YA ones.
Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5521732925966360865.post-42465463052881489642015-02-26T15:48:52.239+01:002015-02-26T15:48:52.239+01:00Hello Marcus,
Great post! I subscribe to the idea...Hello Marcus,

Great post! I subscribe to the idea that YA is a marketing (and character)-related invention and perhaps even a misnomer at that - especially when you look at who is actually reading 'YA books'. And I so agree with the rest (I can't believe that example you gave could be from a book that's actually been published...).

I've translated a few YA's and read some others, and more and more there seems to be a formula that everyone is sticking to. Mainly publishers, because book X sold well and if book Y uses the same strategy...

Be that as it may, but if books Y, Z and A and the others follow the same strategy, the story won't be very surprising anymore, will it? I've read quite a few where you could guess the outcome in advance, and just had to hope the story that took you there was worth it and original enough.

I wholeheartedly enjoyed reading and translating The Mara Dyer books by Michelle Hodkin. It's a trilogy, but unfortunately the publisher decided not to have part three translated, because the first two books didn't sell as many copies as they'd hoped for. Whether that was due to marketing or the fact that the book was 'different'... who knows.

But different it is: it copes very well with a first person perspective by toying with reliability. And it leaves many ends loose until the final book, which Twitter has promised me will be shocking...

And yes, I've also seen a book in which that same choice of first person narration made it necessary for the main character to have a fondness for air vents and crawling through them - just far enough to reach another room where people are talking. Which is only sort of acceptable the first time...

Several writing tips/books/pages that I've seen actually encourage (new) authors to 'do what everyone else does'. Because apparently, that's what publishers want, and that's what sells.

You're right. We need more books that do things differently, that present more than teenagers with green and lavender eyes pining for each other, who are then faced with the mandatory obstacle to being together, which they must overcome (oh, however will they succeed?) in order to live happily ever after. And we need publishers to go looking for these books, promoting these with their campaigns, rather than throwing that money to push best-sellers that'll do fine without the extra marketing bit.
Sandra https://www.blogger.com/profile/05116695686304579619noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5521732925966360865.post-40262841583100553542014-05-03T16:40:54.831+02:002014-05-03T16:40:54.831+02:00In non-authoritative texts, the translator may dec...
